Red Carpet Oscar Blues: Sunday, February 22nd!

One is always a long way from solving a problem until one actually has the answer. -Stephen Hawking

Beverley Wittwer Hi Patrick thank you for the lovely Valentine's Day card much appreciated. Hope you are well, hi to all. xx

Hi you guys, Hope you made it home without incident. Patrick, you asked me to check the Luxe India invoice. I make it that we need to pay $US 6191.00 per couple, or $US 3095.50 each, by February 23, tomorrow. We'll go ahead with our payment. Weather here continues wonderful, but a bit cooler. Did you sell the Island Inn? Cheers, Peter

Hello Desert Storm People! Thanks for the confirmation on payment amounts, Pedrito! Much appreciated. One of the many things we will be doing today.

Cora Lee and Rosita are praying for our tarnished, if not completely black, souls, as I scribe! Flamin' is hosting the Oscar party today, (Sarge is away on Skate Canada business, I gather.), so Clarisse told her daughter they had to come home after church as she needed to put beans in the crock pot. She is making her wonderful dish as her contribution to this evening's fare. Red Carpet starts at 4:00 pm but I may well not go downstairs until a bit later. Dusty isn't even interested as the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is on with Manitoba's Jennifer Jones, (1), playing Alberta's Val Sweeting, (2).

Just talked to Ayn and it is raining heavily in Tinsel Town! Guess we got out of Dodge just in time. Lazy morning, scribing while listening to CBC Radio 2. I'm off shortly to see The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. Will ride to The Cinematheque, on Howe, at 2:00 pm. Hosting bridge domani. At this point not sure how many players there will be but looking forward to evening. Fondestos from Mme Coriandre to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Back from church around noon, Cora Lee and Rosita left for Costco shortly after 1:00 am. I was just suiting up, twenty minutes later Coramandel returned. Parking lots at Costco were choc-a-bloc and they couldn't find a parking spot. Must have been some event at BC Place. At any rate they will go tomorrow. I took off, making for Burrard Bridge, [Not really any difficulty making gradual climb so think I'm on the mend.], at 1:30 pm and was at Cinematheque with enough time to find a good seat to watch The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared:

The story is about Allan Karlsson, a 100-year-old man who ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he’s still in good health, and that the days are getting tedious. When the celebration of his 100th birthday approaches, which Allan isn’t interested in at all, he decides to escape his boring everyday life. He climbs out of a window and a series of events embarks him on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving a gang of criminals, murderers, a suitcase stuffed with cash, an elephant and an incompetent policeman.

What a rollicking, side-splitting ramble through Allan's life and times. Wonderful, charming, hilarious. Much like Forrest Gump but without the "love" interest, inasmuch as our hero manages to meet such historical figures as Franco, Stalin and Einstein's brother, all to his and the assorted "good guys" he inadvertently attracts, benefit. A completely improbable scenario but managed so delightfully that a willing suspension of disbelief is willing embraced.

Back home around Science World to enjoy Flamin's Oscar party.

Chloë was over so first time we had seen each other since we'd left, almost three weeks earlier. She ended up winning pool as Sarge was in Kelowna at a Skate Canada meet. Awards were over at 9:00 pm so back upstairs to watch Downtown and Granchester before making for bed.

Hello Again, Desert Storm Troopers! I just came upstairs while a commercial was on and transfer went through! Pretty smooth. Question fine, etc. Obviously, you can proceed as limits allow. I'll confirm later, depending on what system will accept and you decide to do this evening, or else tomorrow. I'm off to Legacy to buy some very expensive malt! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patrick, That's great. Lynne will send more later, as limits allow. We're going to send $CDN XXXX, which is a bit more than the posted rate. Please keep track and let us know if that is sufficient to cover the $US amount. Out of curiosity, how does the transaction complete at your end. Do you forward the transfer to your bank account, or just send it to the printer to print out crisp 100 dollar bills? Thanks again for taking on the payment job. Peter

Hi, Patrick and Corinne, Hope this is the right email address.

It was great to get caught up the other night. I immediately checked on driving from Vail to Penticton, but it's 21 hours. So, we'll see...

I pulled out one of my mother's diaries, which I hadn't read before, and found this entry from my parents' Vancouver visit in April 1985 -

"Ran had said this family was easy-going, casual, friendly. Yet Ran took off his shoes when bringing us into the house, and suggested we follow suit. I was a little astonished but soon found out that despite Pat and Corinne's fastidious regard for the floor, they are indeed open, casual, friendly. It's like living in a co-op with them, there's no assertion of ownership, they share everything. Randy feels absolutely at home.

We took them out to dinner - to a Greek restaurant they favor. My lamb chops were delicious. Patrick has charm, Coreen a genuine warmth, and Chloe (age 8) is a pixie who is comfortable with adults."

[next day]

"We came back to the house to a chicken dinner - prepared by Coreen and then I went with Pat, Coreen, and Chloe to a Poets' Corner on the pier featuring the popular Robert Priest and seen other young Canadian poets 'Live at Isadora's.' The poets: Maxene Gadd, John Gray, Ken MacDonald, Morris Panych, Sharon Thesen, Peggy Thompson, Carolyn Zonailo, and Robert Priest as mentioned."

[next day]

"Patrick pulled us into a bridge game. He's a librarian at the Uni; Corrine in the city. Pat has a nickname for almost everyone. Mine is Missoura because of my pronunciation. R.L. is Rudolpho; the fair Eda and Terry Theresa, etc." RLN

Great entry! Chloe is still a pixie Lol! that is truly lovely!!

Sean Penn's 'Green Card' Comment May Have Ruined The Entire Oscars

The 2015 Oscars were filled with uplifting stories, calls to action for ALS and Alzheimer's and a powerful reminder of the civil rights movement. But Sean Penn's comment, right before announcing the Best Picture award at Sunday night's ceremony, may have undone it all.

As he prepared to announce Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" as the film of the year, Penn made a reference to the Mexican director's immigration status. “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?," Penn said right before announcing the winner.

Patrick James Dunn I completely disagree! In my opinion Penn was skewering the stranglehold of malignant political correctness which governs too, too much of our lives today. He had the insight to lampoon the deep seated racism which exists, particularly against Mexicans in the US, but against all immigrants, everywhere in this troubled world! Sad to say, you can bet your bottom dollar that far too, too many viewers didn't understand the irony of his comment. and embraced it at face value. Think a little more clearly, a little more deeply, Huff. Ferguson is just around the corner in spite of Selma's "powerful reminder of the civil rights movement."
  • Craig Stewart I agree with dad, penn has always been known to speak his mind, good on him, bunch of republicans probably pushing this agenda
