The Centroid is ready to rock! Today Sunday Nov 16 the Centroid of Burnaby installation happens at 2 pm!. There will be free donuts! The CENTROID of Burnaby is located in Burnaby Lake Park by south of the tennis courts on the east side of Sperling Avenue, ONE BLOCK SOUTH OF THE SPERLING AVENUE & SPROTT STREET INTERSECTION. Ron

Hi Mr Grizzle! Thanks for letting me know. I plan on attending. Save some doughnuts and hot coffee for me! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Auto-Bridge Man! Great to see that you are taking the game seriously! You won't regret it , Big Molly! Not sure if you received the phone message about Mr Grizzle and his installation, The Centroid, at Burnaby Lake this afternoon at 2:00 pm. I plan to ride out there so it would be great if we could hook up. May not be possible, of course, given what you are already up to. Anyway, let me know and we'll plan accordingly
Well, hope to hear from you but given timing you are probably relaxing in front of the fabulous sideboard, (on loan!), and drinking Booker's, with a chaser of Diplomatico, by the mugful! Fondestos from Mme Coriandre to you both. Cheers, Trizzio! BIG AL: Your mailbox was full first time I sent this! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Not sure where we are going but sure glad I'm here !!

Hi Brenda! Trust you are well. Had a message from Paolo informing us that you are hosting dinner on the 23rd. Grand, indeed! What can we contribute? Let us know and we'll plan accordingly. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Elaine and Theodorakis! Trust you are both well. Wanted to send along these snaps taken last Thursday. Anyway, please pass along the snaps to Cecilia and Pat. Look forward to seeing you next Saturday, if not before. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Did a bit of dipsy-doodling once back near Science World as I wanted to log a 50+ km ride. Cheers, Patrizzio! Thanks for the photos! As always wonderful to see you Ron
Mutual, I'm sure!!!

Hi Raymondo! Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply! Trust you are well. Glad we seemed to have missed most of the heavy rains. At least it is possible to ride in the weather of late. Thanks for the news on the Two Jims!

Wondering if you have been riding. Pretty chilly when I went out on Saturday. Went to FCCC to use elliptical yesterday. Had planned to go for another Polar Vortex ride today but hadn't really made up my mind as to where I would go. Decision was made for me when I received a message this morning from Mr Grizzle alerting me to the fact that he would be "installing" one of his sculptures in the "geographic centre" of Burnaby, near Burnaby Lake Park, at 2:00 pm. This being the case I suited up, making sure I was well and truly insulated, (heavy riding jacket, winter riding gloves, thin toque for under my helmet and even socks for my clip-ons!), and then set off, around 1:30 pm, making for Central Valley Greenway. Glorious, glorious day and with the sun shining and no appreciable head wind one couldn't ask for better cycling conditions.

Was pleased to find that the part of the CVG that was not paved, (at least the last time I road there), the section on Still Creek Avenue, between Willingdon and Douglas Road, I believe, was now very nicely surfaced, with a separate pedestrian/bike lane on the north side of the street. However, the stretch between Douglas and Kensington or Sperling is still hard-pack and this part of the route had a number of fairly soft/wet spots that were not ideal for road bikes. Nevertheless, I made it through without mishap, both ways. Had little difficulty locating Mr Grizzle and his cohort, busy erecting The Centroid in a field near the intersection of Sperling Ave and Sprott St but since they didn't seem to be quite finished and it was about 1:40 pm, (ceremony, as such, was to take place around 2:00 pm), I decided to do a bit of exploring.

Kept going south on Sperling until it turned into Glencarin Drive which parallels the Trans Canada for a bit before terminating, in a parking lot, just past the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC. Turning around here I retraced my steps until I made a right onto Roberts St which took me to the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavillion. Rode up onto the large deck/viewing platform there and stopped, (Yes, I know, Dear Reader, The Dreaded Burning Ground but I knew this fate was inevitable if i was to visit with Mr Grizzle so I had already "steeled" myself to take the plunge, so to speak!), to take a few snaps and chat with an angler, (Hungarian, as it turned out), trying his luck in the afternoon sun.

Then back to the installation site and by this time The Centroid was standing, in all its stainless steel glory, shining in the mid-afternoon sun, the polar opposite to the the black monoliths in Space Odyssey 2001, but inspiring a similar sense of bewilderment if not awe and wonder! Mr Grizzle and Wild Bill Thomson had put together this "guerilla art" piece and had invited a few friends to the Installation.

The "ceremony" was a hoot as Bill and Ron, dressed like Madcap Martians went through a Monty Pythonesque take-off of paying hommage to The Centroid at each of the cardinal points of the compass: West, by throwing handfuls of gravel over their shoulders, (Earth); North, by throwing ladles of seltzer over the grass, (Water): South, by lighting sparklers, (Fire);  East, by talking about the project, (Air, mostly hot!): With the help of the Burnaby Engineering Department, Wild Bill was able to ascertain that the Geospatial Centre of the Municipality of Burnaby is at  Lat.49.24815 Long. -122.96494, just south of the tennis courts at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West, hence the installation site. More importantly, with a $20 gift card from Tim Hortons Mr Grizzle was able to provide three boxes of Tim Bits for the assembled onlookers!

Loads of laughs all around and after the chuckles were over I thanked everyone for the "happening" and headed back on the CVG. Only had about 30 km on the clock by the time I hit Main Street so I spent a bit of time dipsy-doodling around Industrial Avenue, Northern Street and Evans Avenue before crossing Main and heading along the Seawall as far as David Lam Park. Turned around here and made for home. (Stats for ride as above) Back at the Islay Inn by 4:15 pm or so to have a shower and change of clothes. Was ready when Cora Lee returned from church service at Heartwood, just before 6:00 pm, to  head back to Broadway to the Rio Theatre, just off Commercial. We wanted to see The Gilded Cage/La Cage Dorée:
"Their innate kindness, fierce dedication to their work and inability to say no have allowed a Portuguese couple to smoothly run a swanky Parisian apartment building for many years. Quiet, indomitable Maria Ribeiro serves as concierge, picking up laundry, babysitting, gardening and performing a host of little services that go far beyond her job description. Salt-of-the-earth hubby Jose, when not working as a construction foreman, performs numerous tasks as handyman in the posh building, living with wife and kids in the crowded concierge’s loge.

An unexpected windfall requires that the couple go back to Portugal to retire in luxury in the land of their dreams. They keep silent about the inheritance but, unbeknownst to them, word gets out, whereupon all the people who depend on their help hatch separate plots to manipulate them into staying.

The building’s owner hires extra personnel to take over some of Maria’s tasks and promises to enlarge her cramped living quarters. Jose’s boss offers praise and a raise, openly encouraging the romance between his son Charles and the Ribeiros’ daughter Paula. Even Maria’s sister Lourdes pretends her husband is dying to ensure that sis sticks around to launch (and cook for) their projected Portuguese restaurant.

When the Ribeiros learn of the selfish scheming of their employers, friends and family, they exact suitably theatrical, highly undutiful revenge. But although they pull off their revolt with commendable panache, their hearts really aren’t in it. They have begun to seriously question where they belong, their commitment to their long-held Portuguese dream vying with their unexpectedly deep French roots."

We both enjoyed it immensely and it was certainly moving, far more so than I thought it would be as humour, overall, was quite gentle, often subtle. Back home to have a late supper. Clarisse came from next door to watch the second episode of Death Comes to Pemberley. (We saw the first episode last night so needed to know if Wickham was guilty or not!) Have you seen it? Based on the P.D. James novel of the same name, a continuation of the events of Pride and Prejudice. Actress who plays Elizabeth is in The Bletchley Circle.

The Horridos Brothers are coming for the night tomorrow, up from Everett where they flew to celebrate their Dad's birthday this weekend. Return to LA on Wednesday. They'll be back for Christmas, with Ayn, so will have a longer visit then. Let me know if you are up for a ride in the next little while. Cheers, Patrizzio, from near a comet, somewhere a billion light years away from Mother Earth and the Known Universe, with nothing but doughnut holes to sustain me on my interstellar, bicycle powered gleaming rocket ship as it negotiates the Worm Holes of Time and Gravity and Deep, Deep, Deepest Space! Snaps: The Centroid Installation!
