Back-to-School/Great White Hunter Blues: Tuesday, September 8th!

People forget years and remember moments. -Ann Beattie, novelist (b. 8 Sep 1947)

We have no air conditioning in our storage building, below the guest house you stayed. There is a night air fan that comes on at midnight and goes off at 7am. During the night we most always get down to 55 degrees so this keeps the wine cool. If you have an area with an outside walls you could do the same. You put a fan on one wall to draw in the cold air and the other wall opens a vent. I could explain more if interested. I am assuming you get cold at night like us, even in the summer..........Dave

Hi David, and (Jugos Dom Pedro, haughty grape picker overseer!)! Thanks for the more than speedy response. Much appreciated. I would like to hear more about your proffered solution. All the walls of the garage, with the exception of the folding garage door, are insulated. Fan intake and outlet units could be mounted on either side walls. However, I didn't think our "heat of the summer" temperatures would go down to 55ºF/12º-13ºC until I did a bit of sleuthing and discovered that according to an average weather chart for Penticton the average low, between June 15th and September 6th, runs between 11º-10ºC/52º-50ºF, so slightly cooler than your temperatures. If global warming doesn't skew these averages, your solution just might be what I need. That being said, this year the temperatures were far higher than the ones listed below, up as high as 38ºC/100ºF, so nights often didn't cool off much.
The warm season lasts from June 15 to September 6 with an average daily high temperature above 24°C. The hottest day of the year is July 30, with an average high of 30°C and low of 15°C.

The cold season lasts from November 16 to February 26 with an average daily high temperature below 6°C. The coldest day of the year is December 28, with an average low of -4°C and high of 0°C.

At any rate, further suggestions/opinions welcomed. Greetings to Patrizzia, yourself and rest of winery crew from Cora Lee. Must away as Mme Coriandre has a chore list as long as my arm. Glad that it is a bit of a rainy day, (We certainly need the precipitation, if only with respect to all the terrible wildfires still raging. Last week, on our hike, saw some plumes near Oliver, another wonderful wine region, south of us by about 50 km/31miles.

This past Sunday, on my ride, the strong wind was out of the southwest and I could see and smell smoke from this region.), so I probably won't go riding anyway. Just stay inside and drink copious quantities of local wine! [JDP makes an exceptional, wonderfully dry, astringent Riesling from his own grapes. Has a contract for his St Laurent and Syrah, (latter comprises most of his plantings), to Nichol Winery.] That way my blood alcohol will be way up when we go to the Travel Clinic this afternoon to see what shots we might need for coming trip to India this October. I presume enough hootch should kill most nasty bugs in Inja! Fondestos, Hic and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Some of hiking group with plumes of smoke in background. Looking southwest towards Oliver.

We had a high of 102 yesterday and a low of 52 so those hot days you mentioned at your place might have cooled down for you also. The simplest solution is......if you have a room with a window and a door to close, like a study, you could store the wine there and just open the window at night when you go to bed. Of course a fan works to help the flow of cold air. The fan has to suck the cold air in, ideally. OR better yet, just buy more Coffaro wine which is bottled early and can stand some heat :-) ..........Dave

Hi Entrepreneur David! And here I thought you wanted to help me but now I know it was just a ploy to sell more Coffaro wine! I'll take ten more cases if you'll "mule" them here when staying for a week, en route to Banff. You'll have plenty of room since Patrizzia isn't coming! Plenty of single-women, your age, in my hiking group so you won't be lonely! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Olga is a firecracker!

Hi Sara Jane! Wonderful that you and Dermot will be able to join us and significantly augment our AVG IQ scale! Thanks, as well, for invitation to "brain food" dinner! Jellied cow cortex is one of Lady Mary's favourite dishes, especially with a touch of horseradish! We are delighted to accept. I assume, with respect to date itself, you are referring to either Friday night or earlier on Saturday evening. At this point, not sure when we will be driving into Vancouver. We have a couple staying here while we are away and in exchange for living here they have agreed to do some home improvements.

This being the case, we would like to be here for a week, more or less, before we head south, to describe what we have in mind, purchase materials, do some of the work together, etc. How this goes will determine, to a certain extent, when we leave Penticton. Will let you know, after we've chatted with Louise and Henryk, what their schedule looks like and we'll be better able to plan our Vancouver stay. I trust this not only makes sense but also is acceptable! While schedule during VWF will be busy we will have a number of days, before and after festival, that might work as well. Anyway, I'll let you know as soon as we know and we can plan accordingly. Greetings to Dermot, yourself and Grade XII student, Jake, from Cora Lee. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Louise, sounds like you've been busy. We will be either going into Vancouver on the 16th or 17th of October. You could join us for Thanksgiving and then we will have the rest of the time to plan and buy needed supplies etc. Let us know what works for you two. Look forward to seeing you, Best Corinne

Hello Fellow Hikers! Thanks to Michaelo for leading such a terrific hike, and Ken for not running away, off leash, too, too much! Perhaps Jim has an extra one belonging to Tia that we could use to tether Bad Boy! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Thank you, Patrizzio, nice pictures. I regret I was not with you. (Too much work.) Al Hi Al! Glad you enjoyed the hike, vicariously! You are always missed, I know. Pleased to meet Mike and Elly, both new to me. Do you know her? Might she be Elvia Dumas or Ellen Tanner? I didn't catch her last name and don't have an email address for her. Don't work too hard. Hope to see you soon. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Elly, (as she introduced herself), is beside Olga Polga!

Patrizzo, Thanks so much for the wonderful pics! See you Thursday. Hugs, Olly

Thanks for the offer of Olga, did you consult her? Sorry, but I don't go anywhere without Pati. I have plenty of room for 10 cases of wine, but how do I get it over the border? As you may remember they did not ask me about wine when I went to visit you last year. I think you said maybe they are only concerned about you, residents?

Hi Patricio, I called Dr Louw's office to plead your case. I guess even my tactful charm has no value there. She said they are swamped and getting many calls from people looking for a family doctor, and it doesn't matter that you're friends of ours or that you would make great patients, the answer is still that the patient list is closed for now. Sounds tough, Peter

Hi Dom Pedro, rhyming fiend! Certainly much appreciate your effort. Unfortunately, in my heart of hearts, I thought the result would probably be negative in spite of your almost irresistible charm! Thanks anyway. I guess we'll have face masks, of you and Lurkin', made in Inja and whenever we have an ache or pain, we'll pull them on, see the doc and then rob a bank. We'll look after the estate while you are both in stir! Everyone wins! Must away as we are off to the Travel Clinic. Cheers, Naramata Estate Manager, pro tem, Patrizzio!

Thanks for the address. Gregg's surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. He has Pro Op this Thursday.  Michele and I would be able to go for Trivia night with you guys. Wayne  Hi again, Sarge! Great that you can join our table for Trivia Night! Cheers, Patrizzio! Sounds interesting and we are fine with the time. Wayne

Hi Pat and Corinne! For the dinner, I was thinking of earlyish on Saturday before the Trivia contest. Dermot's schedule doesn't give him many evenings off but Saturday is always open. So, if that works for you we would be so glad to have you here. I know that you'll be busy when you are here so if this doesn't work we won't be offended.

Jake had an amazingly challenging first day of school: Had to arrive by 2:30, got his schedule and then had his photo taken for his student ID. There must have been more...........but no, that was it. Phew. Going to need some serious behaviour modification to accomplish early awakenings.

Nifty exchange with your pals the handy people (and you are quite trusting as well). Not sure that you could trust Dermot and I - we might shine at clearing out cupboards (food and glass fronted malt cupboards) but not be so terrific on actual renovations!! Sara
