Peach Orchard Road Blues: Thursday, July 2nd!

During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. -George Orwell, writer (1903-1950)

Jill Somer 630,000 euros raised for Greece and going up by the minute! Unbelievable!Patrick James Dunn Hi Jill! Trust you are well but wondering how this latest crisis is affecting you!

Dearest story-telling Patrizio, wonderful to get such explicit and detailed daily travel reports from you. We have been enjoying every tidbit ;).

Due to time and other limitations, I can't quite return the favor. We are 30 minutes away from reaching Vi and Steve and Lexy, their shepherd, in Pass Creek by Castlegar.

We expect to take our time on Sunday, besides are not known as early birds, so how about you expect us between 5 and 6 pm? We will probably miss Chloe which is really too bad. Please send her our love and hugs Big hug to you and Lady Mary (?? ) as well Yda and Arni and Bogart

Hi Sleepy Heads! Take your time. We'll be here, lounging on the patio, sipping wine so the longer you take the more wine we can drink! Yes, do think you'll miss Chloë unless she decides to stay overnight. Probably not but you never know. In any event, will pass along your warm greetings. Thanks.

Must away as need to cut up all of boxes we've emptied and then want to take the carboard and other recyclables to a depot a few minutes away from us. Being in Manitoba, we missed last collection day. Furthermore, glass is not picked up by city so need to take this, along with plastic bags/wrapping and Styrofoam here as well. Enjoy your time with friends. Travel safely. Fondestos to you and Arni, from Lady Mary, (Character in Downtown Abbey know for her regal demeanor.), and Bogart, first pooch to visit! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Back from The Prairies on Canada Day but had to wait until today to start my, on site, training regimen for the GranFondo on July 12th. Had decided I'd do the first third of ride to shake the cobwebs out of my legs after three solid days of driving and no cycling. This being the case, I left shortly before 12:00 am and made for Vancouver Street as first leg is to climb to Upper Bench Road. From there back down to take Lakeshore to 97, making for Summerland. Dipsy-doodled my way past the small parks which dot the shore, most of them packed with sunbathers enjoying the simply gorgeous day.

Just before 8th Generation I left the highway to wend my way through the residential part of Summerland here, on the flats, close to the lake, before I returned to 97 for a short stretch and then I was headed for the longest, steepest climb, (1.7 km) of the ride: Peach Orchard Road. Pleased to find that grade wasn't quite as daunting as I had remembered. Having done it at least three times I suppose I am getting used to its challenges. Anyway, followed Victoria Road out of Summerland and now, since most of the route there is either flat or slightly downhill, I enjoyed every moment. Short climb up to Hilborn and then I was literally swooping down past Dirty Laundry and Silk Scarf, marveling at the cherry orchards which line much of this part of the route, the trees heavily laden with the wonderful fruit! Cherries for sale at Silk Scarf so will probably pick some up when next we wine-taste there, in a week or so, I imagine.

Then a fairly straight run home once back on 97. Wind at my back so I zipped along. Once back in Penticton I made a left onto Riverside Drive and then retraced my earlier route, making for home, with a few purposeful didpsy-doodles to give me 55 km by the time I was back at The Burns Street Stopping Place! Very pleased with outing and trust more of the same will follow, over next week, as I ride different stretches of the overall route, the beter to give it my all on event day. Stats for ride:

Christina Tassell How is life in Penticton, besides cycling. Patrick James Dunn Hard to say as we've been here so little or late! Nevertheless, can only say that we are both still pinching ourselves at our great good fortune to be here although we are still wading through countless boxes yet to be unpacked with nowhere to put things! Top of our list is to buy and put up more shelving wherever we can. Nevertheless, we are still more than enjoying "Christmas morning" with every box we open and will be hosting the start of loads of summer visitors this coming Sunday. Chloë will be driving up tomorrow to spend weekend and help us with our garage sale, either Saturday or Sunday, depending on when we have sale items ready. What with the weather here, I'm looking for one of your fabulous Hills Hoists!

Christina Tassell Thanks for update Patrick James Dunn photos please?Christina Tassell Is there a local IKEA for good shelving systems?

Patrick James Dunn Will post some photos when I've a minute away from Lady Mary and her whip! With respect to shelving there seem to be plenty of places hereabouts, either in Penticton, but also in Kelowna, which is about an hour away, so not quite as convenient, but may well be necessary. At any rate, Cora Lee will be scoping units, whether wall or free-standing, over next little while. Lady Mary in her "jams", a day or so before we left for Winnipeg, annoyed with papparazzo Patrizzio, trying to obtain a candid shot of her on patio! Hills Hoist to go at other end.

If you find yourself on the Naramata Bench, keep your eyes peeled for artisan cheeses crafted by Gitta Pedersen of Poplar Grove Cheese. Her offerings, Naramata Bench Blue, the sinful Okanagan Double Cream Camembert, Harvest Moon Washed Rind (made specifically for the cheese connoisseur) and Tiger Blue (a rich, blue-veined cheese with a bite), sell out quickly and for good reason.

Pair these delectable little gems with wines from Lock & Worth Winery—founded by Ross Hackworth of Nichol Vineyards fame, and Matthew Sherlock, who leased the on-site winemaking facilities at Poplar Grove—and you’ve got yourself an evening that won’t disappoint. Ross and Matt focus on making artisan wines that express the grape varietal and represent the place in which they’re made. “Our wines are fruit-driven, and we want to make wines that our customers are able to enjoy immediately,” says Matt. Driven to making single vineyard, focused wines without pretense, each of their wines has something different to offer, and is a true example of what the Okanagan is.

Patrick, We won't have anything to talk about when we see you as you have provided such detail of your trip! We would like to have dinner with you. We aren't sure of arrival time in Penticton but suspect it will be around 4-5. We won't stay with you but as I said we would like to see your new home and enjoy dinner with you and Corinne.

We were down on Granville Is. on Canada Day and were lamenting the fact you were no longer there. Everywhere in the city was busy that day and the number of Canada shirts, flags, faces painted etc. made you feel proud to be Canadian. The parade was astounding as there was not a white person to be seen - slight exaggeration but not by much. We are looking forward to seeing you and will call when we get close to Penticton. Cheers, Dawn
Hi again, Donna Maria! Glad you enjoyed email so now you won't even have to stay for dinner! Had the exact effect I was hoping for!!! Take your time. We'll be here, lounging on the patio, sipping wine so the longer you take the more wine we can drink! You'll most likely miss Chloë unless she decides to stay overnight. Probably not but you never know. We will plan to have dinner shortly after you arrive as I assume you will be driving on, somewhere. We'll wait for your call and time bbq once we know more precisely when you are likely to knock on our door. Enjoy your time with friends/classmates in Salmo. Travel safely. Fondestos to you and Herardo. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi FedEx Dom Pedro! Thanks very much for delivering all those boxes! Much appreciated! As well, garlic bulbs are wonderful. My Ukrainian Grandmother would be very impressed. Thanks for those as well.

Sorry I missed you but had wanted to start my on site training regimen for the GranFondo on July 12th, not all that far away!
Lady Mary was out when I returned so after a delicious mug of java I proceeded to cut up all of boxes we've emptied. (Thanks very much for bringing more!) Tomorrow we and then want to take the cardboard and other recyclables to the depot. Being in Manitoba, we missed last collection day and recycling place was closed on the Sunday before we left! Furthermore, glass is not picked up by city so need to take this, along with plastic bags/wrapping and Styrofoam here as well. Plenty to do as I'm sure you can imagine. Fondestos to you both from Mme Coriandre just out at the bbq finishing off the pork chops we'll have for dinner. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: Some of the un-packing waiting for you two on Sunday! Even Naramatians have to sing for their supper!
